IELTS GT vs CELPIP: Which English Test Should You Choose for Canada PR in 2026?

Planning Canada PR through Express Entry or a PNP? IRCC accepts three English tests: IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core. IELTS Academic is not accepted. So which one suits you best?

Choose CELPIP if…

Canada is your only destination – CELPIP is built for Canadian immigration. You prefer a fully computer-based test finished in one sitting. You are comfortable speaking into a microphone and enjoy everyday Canadian English. You like simple scoring: CELPIP levels map almost one-to-one to CLB levels.

Choose IELTS GT if…

You want options beyond Canada – Australia, the UK and New Zealand also accept IELTS. You perform better in a face-to-face speaking test with a live examiner. You need a test centre close to home – IELTS has the widest network in India.

Our Expert Tip

Remember, IRCC looks at each skill's CLB level, not your overall band. One weak module can cost you valuable CRS points. Take a diagnostic mock of both tests first, then commit to the one where you naturally score higher. Since 2003, our trainers have guided thousands of students through IELTS coaching, CELPIP coaching, PTE, TOEFL, NAATI and study visa services under Punjab Government licence no. 108.
