IELTS Writing Task-1 Question Types Report Writing Guide

IELTS Writing Task 1 Question Types: Your Complete Report Writing Guide

Struggling with IELTS Academic Writing Task 1? You get just 20 minutes to describe a visual in at least 150 words, and recognising the question type is half the battle. Here are the seven report types every IELTS candidate must master.

7 IELTS Task 1 Question Types

Line Graph – describe trends over time: rises, falls, peaks and plateaus. Bar Chart – compare categories and group similar bars together. Pie Chart – compare proportions using percentages and fractions. Table – select key figures; never list every number. Process Diagram – explain each stage in sequence using the passive voice. Map – describe how a place changed, using location language. Mixed Charts – link two visuals and highlight connections.

The Band 7+ Report Structure

Introduction: paraphrase the question. Overall: summarise the main trends – examiners look for this first. 2 Body paragraphs: support with accurate data and comparisons. To Conclude (non-mandatory): Any other unique trend, not written in Overall Never give opinions. Examiners assess Task Achievement, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy.

PTE Academic Partial Marking Question Types

Which PTE Academic Question Types Have Partial Marking?

In PTE Academic, not every question is all-or-nothing. Knowing how each task is scored helps you decide where to take a risk and where to play safe, which matters for your study visa score goals.

Partial Credit Questions

You earn marks for each correct part, even if the whole answer isn't perfect: Speaking: Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Retell Lecture, Respond to a Situation, Summarize Group Discussion Writing: Summarize Written Text, Write Essay Reading: Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks, Reading Fill in the Blanks, Re-order Paragraphs (marked per correct adjacent pair) Listening: Summarize Spoken Text, Fill in the Blanks, Write from Dictation (marked per correct word)

Partial Credit with Negative Marking

Multiple Choice, Multiple Answers (Reading and Listening) and Highlight Incorrect Words give +1 for each correct choice and −1 for each wrong one. The lowest score is zero, so don't guess wildly.

Right or Wrong Only

Multiple Choice, Single Answer (Reading and Listening), Highlight Correct Summary, Select Missing Word and Answer Short Question score full marks or nothing. Always attempt them: there's no penalty.

Our Expert Tip

Practise Write from Dictation daily. Every correct word counts, and it boosts both listening and writing. Want a 79+ score? Join expert PTE coaching at SillySyllabus.com or TECOnline.in, trusted since 2003, Punjab Govt. Licence No. 108.

5 Common PTE Core Exam Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

5 Common PTE Core Exam Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

PTE Core is a computer-based English test accepted by IRCC for Canada PR and Express Entry. Because it is scored by AI, small habits can cost you big points. Here are the five mistakes we see most often in our classrooms.

1. Long Pauses While Speaking

The microphone stops recording after a few seconds of silence. Fix: keep a steady, natural pace. Fluency matters more than fancy vocabulary.

2. Ignoring Word Limits

Going over or under the limit in Summarize Written Text or Write an Email can drop your score sharply. Fix: check the word counter before moving on.

3. Using PTE Academic Material

PTE Core uses everyday, general-English tasks such as Respond to a Situation. Fix: practise with Core-specific mock tests only.

4. Poor Time Management

Spending too long on one Reading question leaves no time for the rest. Fix: set a time budget per task and move on.

5. Underestimating Integrated Tasks

Tasks like Repeat Sentence score both speaking and listening. Fix: give them extra practice—they lift two scores at once.

Our Expert Tip

Take full-length timed mocks every day and review your weakest skill against your target CLB score. Ready to score higher? Join expert PTE Core coaching at SillySyllabus.com or TECOnline.in—trusted since 2003, Punjab Govt. Licence No. 108.

IELTS Band 7 Essay Structure Writing Task 2 Guide

IELTS Band 7 Essay Structure: The 5-Paragraph Formula That Works

Stuck at Band 6? Most IELTS Writing Task 2 essays lose marks on organisation, not English. Examiners score four equally weighted criteria: Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. At Band 7, the official descriptors require ideas that are “logically organised” with “a clear progression throughout.”

The Band 7 Essay Structure (270–300 words, 40 minutes)

Introduction (2 sentences): paraphrase the question, then state a clear position. Body Paragraph 1: topic sentence → explanation → specific example. Body Paragraph 2: your second main idea, same pattern. Body Paragraph 3: a third idea, or the opposing view in “discuss both views” essays. Conclusion (1–2 sentences): restate your position. No new ideas.

Band 7 Checklist

Answer every part of the question. Keep one central idea per paragraph. Link with referencing (“this trend”, “such policies”), not just “Firstly” and “Moreover”. Mix complex sentences; aim for frequent error-free ones. Use natural collocations like “alleviate congestion”. Keep each body paragraph to 60–70 words; plan 5 minutes, write 30, check 5.

Mistakes That Keep You at Band 6

Memorised templates (examiners penalise them), overused linking words, vague examples and essays under 250 words.

IELTS GT vs CELPIP - Which English Test to Choose for Canada PR 2026

IELTS GT vs CELPIP: Which English Test Should You Choose for Canada PR in 2026?

Planning Canada PR through Express Entry or a PNP? IRCC accepts three English tests: IELTS General Training, CELPIP-General and PTE Core. IELTS Academic is not accepted. So which one suits you best?

Choose CELPIP if…

Canada is your only destination – CELPIP is built for Canadian immigration. You prefer a fully computer-based test finished in one sitting. You are comfortable speaking into a microphone and enjoy everyday Canadian English. You like simple scoring: CELPIP levels map almost one-to-one to CLB levels.

Choose IELTS GT if…

You want options beyond Canada – Australia, the UK and New Zealand also accept IELTS. You perform better in a face-to-face speaking test with a live examiner. You need a test centre close to home – IELTS has the widest network in India.

Our Expert Tip

Remember, IRCC looks at each skill's CLB level, not your overall band. One weak module can cost you valuable CRS points. Take a diagnostic mock of both tests first, then commit to the one where you naturally score higher. Since 2003, our trainers have guided thousands of students through IELTS coaching, CELPIP coaching, PTE, TOEFL, NAATI and study visa services under Punjab Government licence no. 108. Not sure which test fits you? Book a free mock test at SillySyllabus.com or TECOnline.in today!
